One person CAN make a difference in the life of a child.
Is Child Abuse Really a Problem?
While child abuse is neither a pleasant nor easy topic to discuss, it is an unfortunate reality in our society. The statistics speak for themselves:
-
There are more than 225,000 investigations of reported child maltreatment every year in Canada. Of these, half will be substantiated, but many more cases are never even reported.
-
70% of all substantiated cases of physical abuse involve corporal punishment in the name of discipline.
-
1 in 4 children will be victim to an unwanted sexual act before their 18th birthday
-
Over 85-90% of perpetrators of child sexual abuse are KNOWN to the child, NOT STRANGERS
-
1 in 4 households have experienced some form of domestic violence
-
Neglect is the most common form of maltreatment substantiated in Canada
-
In 2010-2011 there were 3,260 investigations of child maltreatment in Windsor-Essex
What Can I do to Help?
Currently there is limited government funding to support child abuse education and prevention. Funds must be raised locally so that we can continue to work toward a safe and healthy community for our children. A donation made in your name, or on behalf of someone else, can help us to continue to deliver our important programs!
The Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Foundation supports the work of the Children's Aid Society by raising funds to provide and/or enhance the valuable services for our children and families that are not funded by the provincial government. These include programs such as Fresh Air Summer Camp, our Holiday Sponsorship Program, Scholarships and Bursaries for post secondary education, and Public Education and Prevention efforts.

Why is it My Responsibility to Get Involved?
As a community, ending child abuse is all of our responsibility. We are all impacted by child abuse - as taxpayers, employers, friends, family, neighbours and as human beings. Child abuse is linked to poor parenting, mental health issues and other social issues as children move to adulthood. We must work together to end the cycle of abuse.
